The rampant child sexual abuse and institutionalized cover-ups by the Catholic church, moving predators from parish to parish with an almost banal immorality and hypocrisy. The Ireland that felt it right and proper to rip a child from its mother's arms, with no recourse for either to know of the other's wellbeing or, indeed, existence. Ireland had felt it right and proper to label a child ‘illegitimate’, a term that robbed a young person of their own identity while ostracizing young women who had the temerity to have sex with someone they wanted to. She came to be when Irish people were still struggling to address the great, open, unspoken secrets of a State in the thrall of the Catholic church, and all that goes with it. Sinead was of her time but utterly timeless. As silence comes with her untimely death, that state of being seems so utterly, jarringly wrong for Sinead O’Connor. It is impossible to think of a voice that has ever been so powerful, in so many ways.
